Iris in Blue Light by Siri LipscombInscrutable blues pierce the
Fragile unprotected flower
Brilliant glare warming iris petals
Watching them unfold and mold
Themselves around the stalky reed
Upon which she is perched
Reciprocal heat from
This observed unfolding
Freeing wrapped and curled petals
To dry their dewy tears
And reveal her sacred core
Knowing with cosmic certainty
The light is life for her
Finding in it and knowing
The peace and acceptance
Of natural order
Hearing the harmony
Of their ancient song
And knowing the gaze will
Neither burn her melting nectar
Nor scorch her pastel
Gossamer attire
Light enrapturing unfettered flower
And capturing forever her
Elemental attachment
Such purity of light allowing
The iris to feel free
Neither bound nor tethered
Blooming tall and skyward
Toward the face of God she sees
Feeling no earthly anchor
Willingly and hungrily leaning
Toward the light
Toward that which nourishes
Her solitary soul
Unembarrassed in her
Natural gravitation
Finally she is ready
To rise to her radiant
Full bloom once again
To dazzle the light and
To be dizzied in the
Whiteness of its stare
Experiencing for one more season
That indulgent cognizant fusion
Between these forces of nature
When the inscrutable and
The fragile participate
In divine mysterious ritual
For however brief that
Moment in time and however
Fleeting their tangential connection
Each - the flower and the light beyond -
Gives fully that which is to be given
Etching onto the face of time
Their eternal bond

Posted by JD Clay on 10/11/03 at 12:16 PM This is truly metamorphic poetry, Sirius. I love the delicate style that seems to float throughout this luminescent piece. I also enjoy the suble link between you and the light in the climactic close, as well as the link between the beautiful flower (Iris...Siri) and yourself. Masterfully done.
