i had a one night stand with the grim reaper

by Rachelle Howe

her eyes were death.
i was imbibed by her grim reaper sensibilities.
her scythe-clad hands held me,
cut me to the quick, and
i bled out before i had even begun.

she said swallow, and
i said i hadn't a throat.
she said, well that's just too bad
'cause the bittersweet
is coming down the shaft.
i told her to dig it; she said thrust.

we did.
all night.

she said breathe and
i said i'd been floating face down for
far too long.
we were written in the sheets,
and of that night, all that's left
are the stains.

Oh, now, look here. In all innocence I came to check out your new poem (which, by the way, is awesome). And look at that! You put MY NAME down there for just anybody to see, and now I'm all blushing and embarrassed! Why can't you just send everybody to the zoo to watch the monkeys?

there's nothing like anger with the stigma of sex to fuel it. This is highly flammable!

"she said swallow / and i said i hadn't a throat" is masterful-- and if your narrator can't breathe from being face down for so long, the poem breathes for her, pure breaking-the-surface fresh air.

Definitely a wow to this. You had me intrigued by the title and the poem was just as good.
