nothing comes from nothing

by Michele Schottelkorb

nothing comes from nothing
nothing ever could
so when you look up at the stars
remember me if you could

I may die tomorrow
and leave you here alone
madness is killing me
the ever constant drone

nothing comes from nothing
nothing ever could
so when you see my face
please torch it like some wood

Author's Note: the first two lines in stanzas one and three come from a saying that my husband has repeated to me over the years that he heard as a child (i am not sure of the person who said it, please let me know if you do)... the original saying is : "nothing comes from nothing, nothing ever could... so somewhere in my youth or childhood, i must have done something good"... i kind of took this poem in the other direction...

There is a shredding of convention to this piece that really speaks to the reader. Excellent verse with many different ways to take it. Thanks for sharing.

The original, as I know it, comes from a song in the movie "The Sound of Music" and is sung as a love song between the two main characters, Maria and the father of the children she's taking care of. It's just one of many great songs from that movie, one of my favorites still. You have definitely taken it in a different direction, a bit more on the darker side I'd say! [;0)~

Well, with your kind permission I wish to give this yet another direction. Nothing comes from nothing, nothing ever could/ a thing called something, always emerges from a thing, called nothing. Sorry, but this is how I understand this. But I am still wondering as to why have you tried to turn something into nothing? I think I need some enlightenment here."so when you see my face please torch it like some wood"???
