what winter takes as we sleep

by Olivia Weinkein

he was such a lonely thing
and there was nothing left to do but
try to find a way
to love him.

and when all of the birds began to fly
south for the winter and every creak
of this old house intensified,
i dressed to keep the cold out
for the both of us.

but it was a long, long winter and so
very hard to keep anything alive.

i wish he would have survived so he could
have seen just how beautiful spring
could be after you've held on so tightly
to welcome it.

how spring can just make everything
seem worth it.

i planted flowers for him and one day,
they will find their way to him
and show him
that i have not forgotten.
i have not forgotten anything and
i still dress to keep the cold out

for the both of us.

I like this one. I'm surprised it's never been commented on before. Winter's so depressing, I wish it could just be spring all the time.
