topic: the meaning of again

by Rachelle Howe

i've outgrown my shoes.
they fit like a second skin,
cramping my toes and
biting their way to my ankles.
i take them off, molting
serpentine gestures, reverberant.
the wind glances across the grass,
kissing the shore and water of the pond.

i sigh.
the beauty around me crawls
up my spine, into my throat.
i could cough up nature,
dry heave its splendor.
i'm often full with the sounds of willows.

knees are pulled to the stone of my torso,
arms wrapped around, those embered tree limbs.
i'm beneath the weight, in the shadows,
relaxing in the radiance of these things i
do not know and do not have to.

it's an amazing thing when one realizes
that they are not god,
when those ties encase your
soul. shackles are released,
shedding those fears like scales.

so this is how it feels when
the rushing waves roll by.
this is what it means to turn the world over
and start again.

I'm stunned and humbled. Unparalleled imagery.
