Stakes and Ladders

by Karen Michelle

didn't your mother
ever tell you,
always remember
where you came from?
- and i don't mean
that seedy little
creation story

but just because they
put you on a pedestal
bow down at your feet
shower you with rose petals
doesn't mean you were
born a queen

i can see you
silhouetted against
the milky translucence
of the glass house
sun on your bronzed back
soil beneath your
bare overworked feet

this is your heritage
this is your bloodline
this is your truth
and i am not
your lady-in-waiting

i'm tired of
balancing you
on my shoulders
