Spaceship Eye by Bruce W Niedt
For weeks I have marveled at Mars,
the closest itÂ’s been in eons,
climbing the southern sky,
bright, orange, unblinking.
It was so impressive on moonless nights,
that when the moon moved into its quarter,
I feared it would detract from the spectacle.
Instead, the view gives me goose bumps.
Here we have two heavenly spheres,
one close, one more distant, reflecting
the same sunlight that blazes their faces
and rebounds back to us.
As I gaze up, I can almost see
the depth of space:
looking out past the moon, past Mars and beyond,
my eye unimpeded by horizons. 09/09/2003 Author's Note: [My second poem about the Mars phenomenon - sorry if I'm getting repititious!]
