shattered

by Melinda Sordino

i look at
the shattered glass,
picking up pieces
trying to fix them,
but my life
will never be the same.

the falling stars
remind me of
my wonderful golden dreams,
and hopes and smiles
given up forever.

you look at me,
and all you can see
is my pretty, smiling mask
and all the costumes
and every single lie.

if you try
you can see right inside
to the weak and battered person
who lives deep within
my soul.

I feel like that all the time, but I swallow the shards down with sugar.
