Just Another Candle by Charles J HannanDusty roads turn Autumn
Along a patch of cattails
Blowing softly in the breeze
Telltale signs of another beginning
Of another ending
Summer's fading into the west
As the hummingbirds dart at each other
Like tiny airplanes dogfighting
And a lone crysalis
Dangling by thread
Marks the last of the September colors
The purple cone flowers are nothing more
Than food for the wanting gold finches
And the cooling rains will soon appear
Washing away another year
A little sad to see it disappear
With old man winter hobbling
Just around the corner
Taking away my colorful life
And leaving me with just another candle
In my cake
