September's December

by Philippa Jane

I fast forwarded to the date,
anxiously scanning through
the archives to discover if
you thought of me that day -

our relationship paused,
we'd abandoned months of
overexposed film, expiration
date unknown. Yet I held faith
in your memory's reruns.

Today, presented with a
still shot, I zoomed in
on the hour; set focus on
the thoughts that had plagued
your extended silence.

And I cried when I finally read
your solitude's recollection -
released a tear for the girl
who never anticipated to

die at your mercy on
her birthday.

Those last two lines were like a knife in the back - but in the most perfect way. This whole poem leaves me ambiguous - caught in limbo, somewhere between smiles and tears. just lovely.
