angel

by Emily G Myers

she sits silently
cigarette smoke rises in circles and swirls

she misses him
but you wouldn't know it by her face

she doesn't cry
but the pain pleads for release

she hates him
and she could instantly love him again

she can't sleep
the hotel room is bare and unfriendly

she watches TV
never hearing a word or seeing a thing

she holds her chest
pretending it doesn't hurt but it's killing her

she's not jealous
but she knows truthfully she's better

she doesn't move
if she did, things would fall apart

she stares ahead
moving her eyes would cause a loss of control

her brain doesn't miss him
but her heart knows the truth
