whenever you need me, she said by Mainon A Schwartzi'm here whenever you need me she said
realizing only after the words were hanging
limply in the air how pitiful she'd made
herself
i'm here whenever you need me
like an extra roll of toilet paper underneath
the sink
like the tire jack in your trunk that you
don't even know how to use but nevertheless
it's there
like a condom in your nightstand just in
case
i'm here
the spare key tossed in a junk drawer and
forgotten
the change lost in the couch cushions that
usually gets sucked into the vacuum
cleaner
the circuit breaker in a dusty basement with
cobwebs
i'm the flotation device in your airplane seat
she said and you don't even know how to detach
it but if you did and stuck your arms through
the handles i'd keep you afloat
but she realized after she said it that
he'd only use her in an emergency
when his life was crashing down and then
she wouldn't want him anyway

Posted by Rachelle Howe on 09/04/03 at 10:49 PM we all, any of us who have made ourselves vulnerable to a criminal of hearts, have felt this. very well put. i wish i would have written it. ;) |
Posted by Don Coffman on 09/05/03 at 05:15 PM Sometimes trying to be nice isn't the best thing. This reminds me of someone who decided they had a 'safety blanket' and screwed themselves up even more. The examples you made are stark and accurate, really get the sense of pointlessness across. |
