The Sea

by Megan Langley

Her eyes swell as she glances towards each glittering grain of sand.
Not far ahead lay the vast sea of despair,
Or is it the sea of hope,
She knows not.
As she strides towards the water,
Her feet drag, making impressions of her route,
Which shall be her last.
Each tear disappears into the approaching tide.
To think that these droplets of emotion shed from her own eyes
Become indistinguishable with all others
Is cause enough for an electrifying chill to disperse within her body.
She knows what she has come here to do
And gathers determination to follow through,
For this shall be her last cry to the world.
She knows, yet does not halt,
That this cry will never be heard,
But it makes no matter,
As the salt-water will have already forced its way into her lungs,
Ceasing any last breath.
She cries.
She gasps.
She knows.
