Beneath the Hero's Cape

by Cathlyn Cartier

Searching for a friend,
Hoping to find a hero…

One to comfort in times of trials,
Rejoice in triumphs,
Offer hope during sorrow,
And laugh at the foibles of humanity.

Relying on the strength of character presented,
To discover instead…

A coward.

Living a life of secrets and half-truths,
Hiding behind a façade of lies and deceit,
Desperately trying to shield your visage
From the light of honesty and truth
That would reveal the darkness in your soul.

Cowering,
As if you were the victim, not the perpetrator,
Guilty of betraying trust and killing the faith of those whom thought you a friend.

None stand to condemn you.
Who can judge the heart of another man?
Who can know what lies in the deep, hidden recesses of another’s soul?
Even the fool must one day stand to face the consequences of his life.

Makes one cry out, "Is it I, Lord?" It is all too easy to "put on the front", especially on the Internet (as has been stated). A powerful reminder that we will be accountable. God have mercy!

You've put this thought into verse very well, looking at a virtue that doesn't seem to be important to a lot of people anymore as long as they can have their cape making them look good. Thoughtful indeed.
