Something sweet

by Scott Cadence

I used to anticipate you
on a daily basis
Plan our slideshow moments
in excess
Choreograph every movement
to perfection

Nights were spent
imagining all the ways
to embrace your face,
encompass a thousand different emotions
with our hands,
and like a word translates its meaning
will you ever understand
this touch beyond touch?

Today I saw you broken
like this city spinning its last ray of light
reacting on impulse
for the next sensory indulgence,
and I have taken back seat
on many occasions
pretending the desert
is also desolate of God

But in the mess of you
I have to see myself
because I would never give up
on myself

Tomorrow will be unlike anyday we have spent together
I have nothing planned,
so let the awkward silences retrieve the truth
where the ends are unsure and frayed
perhaps we will stumble
onto something sweet
