topic: stagnant waters by Rachelle Howemy walls caved in today.
i found myself naked,
eyes roaming, your fingers
searching the braille of my skin.
the goosebumps rose, and i
heard your ragged intake as we
delved into the vices of flesh.
my ankles, first, then torso,
finally, all of me had been submerged
beneath the stagnant waters.
i floundered, there, content to float,
content to breathe in the essence of you, of us...
but when i started to lose the very thing that
makes me human
(as i turned over my soul to lesser gods)
i realized the world was slipping, and all was fading to black.
you're quicksand, you see,
and easily i'm entrapped.
i would go willingly, that lamb to the slaughter,
if it weren't for the other ties that bind.
but i'm unable to make a choice,
unable to live with the knowledge
that i saw you there, gasping for redemption...
watching, immobilized, unrelenting,
while you drowned.

Posted by Mainon A Schwartz on 09/05/03 at 10:40 PM The attribution of divinity to quicksand is a startling one, but nevertheless effective and compelling. The first stanza is my favorite... and I hope you don't mind my saying so, but I thought the "do the right thing" line brought too much of the mundane/prosaic into what is otherwise a beautiful, other-worldly-feeling poem. |
