I Believe (My Credo)

by Philippa Jane

I believe in the desire to chase dreams,
the faith in happiness preceding everything,
the warmth of hearty laughter after tears,
the joy found in love returned
        seizing the moment
                giant leaps of faith
                        trusting gut feelings.

I believe in mutual respect and empathy,
I believe in chance meetings and life-changing moments,
I believe in never enforcing limits on possibility
                compassion
                            honesty
                                        generosity.

I believe in music’s ability to heal wounds,
the deep impact of my words,
the greater impact of my silence,
the power of entwined fingers
        offering a smile
                listening with one’s eyes
                        thinking outside the box.

I believe in passionate arguments and opinions,
I believe in sincere apologies and forgiveness,
I believe in the hope nestled in confessing fear
                weaknesses
                            loneliness
                                        love.

And I believe in the promise of my individuality.

Author's Note: I didn't write this as a poem, but it's important to me and I feel like it's something that needs to be shared, so I wanted to upload it here anyway. It was written as a class assignment and based on two different credo structures I'd read (one of which was from the movie Bill Durham).
