First Day Of School (Oh, the humanity!)

by Madeline Pestolesi

Plunge my hand in liquid gel ink
Up to the elbow,
And smear it across my eyes
To hide the sunshine:
The run-ins with my past.
If I use enough,
I won't have to see
The gathering clouds
And turning leaves.
So many people
Claim to love the fall,
But that's all it is to me:

Fall.

Falling into darkness
And the cruelty of Alaska's winter.
Icy roads and bad moods.
The pretty colors of the leaves
Isn't enough to lighten
My black attitude.

Congratulations on POTD. This piece is yet another strong reminder of why I moved to the desert.
