Hope Deferred

by Christel Crews

standing on the brink of tomorrow
holding no aspirations for the future
another day void of laughter
another night of tears
the soul within dies again
for the new season is lifeless, numb

staring down the path towards tomorrow
a day filled with meaningless tasks
another hope deferred
another dream falls short
the heart grows sickly cold
the new season lies in being alone

lost in unanswered questions of tomorrow
aimlessly walking towards an unknown goal
another smile to fake
another life to paint
while i drown in the tears i can't make
pondering this new season of the living dead

Christel, I was drawn to this poem's title because I've been in this place too many times, feeling exactly like you describe so well in the poem. It's sad that so many feel like this, only to learn later (as I have) that some form of hope always exists. sometimes, it just needs a bit of help to appear, but it does.
