the boys we keep.

by Olivia Weinkein

you wear them in your pocket
i say to you i prefer to wear them
around my neck. easier to shake
off that way but still capable of being
held on to if the need is there.

sometimes, i don't think we're on the
same page.

but we both know what it's like to be girls.
and we both know what it's like to love
the boys who see love as foreign matter
stuck in the eye of every heartbroken girl
they've ever known every time it was
just easier to walk away.

you wear them in your pocket
i say to you i prefer to wear them
around my neck. easier to shake
off that way but still capable of being
held on to if the need is there.

and sometimes, i think we're on the exact
same page.

Excellent structure that really brings the poem full circle in understanding. Thanks for sharing.
