Solstice

by Sarah Brookes

Crustflame coats the earth,
smoked-musk breezes sift
over pepper-dust beaches
in the acrid glare of saffron light.

The sting of salt kissed as limbs
skulked beside hissing snakeseas
- perforated my skin, sent me running
through huskshells, firedust and brine.

Fingers taste gingersnap.
Flowing through the ochres
of sand hewn hair, musing
over cockleshells as they trip
beyond rock pools, coursing through
drift-wooded crookspines and crags.

We crept between the outbreaks
of half melted sandcastles,
invisible in the hotbright like
moor whisps or ghosts.

Steam vents of dune grass
fanned sultry spiced winds
down gold sprinkled backs
as oil flecked feet dangled

in flow fluid shine.

This piece took me back to the beaches in Hawaii and a really fun summer. Thanks for nice work. --bf

This poem seems to be calling out, as if seeking a place of its own. I has an interesting feel with a sense of longing, like an open plea. Peace...
