Aubergine

by Karen Michelle

Tonight, on the fringe
of your latest update,
I am taking this
scientifically-proven-dolphin-friendly
cleanser for the soul
and flushing you
out of my system.

Languishing in this
woman-made disaster zone,
I resolve, once again,
to turn over a new leaf.

Oh, Gift of Sight,
you claim to be
my greatest ally,
but in these dry times,
your perception fails me
and I am seeing holes
where there should be plains.

The waiters at tonight's restaurant
moved like ballet dancers.
Gracefully, with all the poise of
Nureyev, Barishnikov or Fontaine,
they glided up to the table
tilted their heads to one side
and awaited the curtain call.

And in the pregnant silence
between desire and request,
I made a new promise
to float through tomorrow
with the dazzle of spotlights
in my weary eyes
and the whisper of adoration
echoing in my thoughts.
