Off to War by Brian Francis
There are flowers once again
in the hands of young men,
as they give them to their girls
before they leave and go to war.
There are tears of goodbye
in the corner of the eye,
as the soldiers march away
and once again, they go to war.
And for the names of those who fall
should we build another wall;
another place to stand and cry
remembering those lost to war?
Now in this time of great needs
our nation suffers and it bleeds.
Politicians lead us with lies
and once again we are at war.

Posted by Amanda J Cobb on 07/30/03 at 01:17 AM I keep finding little bits in your poems that hit upon the truth and I find that wonderful. In this case it is the last 2 lines: "Politicians lead us with lies / and once again we are at war." How very sadly true. Good piece. |
Posted by Quentin S Clingerman on 07/31/03 at 03:24 PM You are a consistent writer in polish and word craftsmanship. The last stanza is left to interpretation. From my perspective it is the lies of Terrorist leaders such as Saddam Hussein that lead us to war. 9/11 does not allow us any longer to play a "waiting game" with those who have shown clearly by their actions what they are prepared to do. (My two cents worth.) You write with empathy for those who must go and those who must watch them go. |
