*And I Sugar-Coat My Hatred by Mainon A SchwartzDunked without warning
Like a doughnut into coffee
I came up sputtering and hot,
Flinging scalding black liquid
Into the air
With every step I took.
The only dilution
Of that bitter black anger
Took the form of poison
Disguised as sugar.
White crystals, sparkling
As they poured out of my mouth
In a thick stream of
Dangerous sweetness.
Did you recognize the threat
And hide behind the porcelain?
You did not.
I will not blame myself for your
Insolent inattention.
Burned without warning
Like a moth by a matchflame
You went down sputtering and hurt,
Shooting wild black glances
At the passersby
Who kept walking, eyes straight ahead.
The only delusion
That survived after that day
Was the one I poured myself
When I was done.
