the phoenix

by Michele Schottelkorb

bewildered and shaken

the phoenix rises from the flames

the carnage has caused

as only ashes remain

here

in this world of uncertainty

the bird of courage and virtue

flies above the tattered staircase

hovers over what used to be

what could have been

what never will be

and smiles

the future is unwritten

choices are to be made

the phoenix soars

with the knowledge that

it’s path

is

it’s own

I really liked that. I've never read any of your work before, I think I shall read some more.
