Sierras # 2 by Leonard M HawkesBroad, round shouldered
And granitic,
A mounded
Stony barrier,
Thick, resistive,
Often thinly clad,
Burnt bare,
Or rubbed raw
By brutal ice;
Formed to afflict
And torment Man,
The sea wall
Of the western sky,
Guzzling seasonally
Lest Basin Life
Become too easy,
Its deizens weak:
Propitious pallisade
Of arid faith.
