Dear God, can I call you daddy?

by Bet Yeldem

Dear God,
Since my dad doesn't live with us anymore, there's something I wanted to ask you...
Mom says you are my heavenly father.
What does that mean exactly?
Do you watch over me every day?
Do you keep me safe even when I think I don't need protecting?
Is that your warmth I feel when she tucks me in?
Was that your voice telling me to stay away from strangers?
Do you know what I wish for?
Could you help me know what I will do someday?
Have you ever cried with me?
Do you always see past the brave face I put on for Mom?
Are you going to take care of us?
Is it true that you said you will never leave us?
Is it true that you always keep your promises no matter what?
When I'm tired, will you carry me?
Will you hold me on your shoulders so I can see the world?
Mom says you love me so much that you gave your son to die for me.
When I asked you to live with me in my heart, does that mean that we're a family?

If you adopted me and love me, then, God, what I really want to know is...
Can I call you daddy?
Will you teach me how to be a man?

Hi Jem, It's beautiful, sad too. It's heartbreaking. From such a brave child, so young. They can ask or say some of the darnest things too. How precious. Sweet. Peace & Joy, Jean.

Jem, Yes, it's very hard for a child to understand. But, he seems pretty wise for a young child. They see others with both parents and wonder why.
