Sandcastle by Mary Ellen Smith
at dusk the castles silhouette steals the last sweet beam of light.
illuminates the parapet and the last sea gulls retreating flight.
high above in the castle keep, ocean breezes roar a tune.
a song well known in the deep, underneath a knowing moon.
her moat, alas floods and there, in her halls no echo's made.
no armored knight or maiden fair resides there in the oceans shade.
honeycomb hues of daylights last beg the foaming tides to swell.
summer blues and greens are cast over shore and sand and pearled shell.
unfortified, she fights till death. until the sea reclaims its own.
the castle melts in one last breath leaving one more king without a throne.
