Grandfather threw sacks of extra cats into the river,
His sister did the same.
Mother's neighbor backed over their cat in the drive
Before it was even named.

Grandma fluffed her Fluffy up in the dryer long ago
While her hand we tried to stay.
Aunt Jane then had enough of her Muffin's diabetic woes
And so had her put away.

Next was Uncle Kit's cat, Max, who pranksters set ablaze;
They never found the guys.
Then Cousin Eddie hit his kitty, just to see it dazed,
But it never reopened its eyes.

I can say a cat has never lived and died between my hands;
A bigger truth, I have to say,
Has never yet been written.
I believe God makes and takes and only God commands -
And I only know the Holy way
For myself to kill a kitten.
