Ode to an Electric Scooter

by Madeline Pestolesi

Free at last
The wind blows not over my hair,
But instead my lack thereof,
My scalp is frozen.
My eyes are watering,
And nevermind the six elderly tourists
I practically plowed down.

I have found
That joy is in reckless driving.
Driving sixteen miles per hour on a scooter,
On a path marked
"No Motorized Vehicles!"
Without a helmet
Or even an excellent grasp of steering and braking.

I now have apathy for bikers
And why they love their "hogs"
Because this is a $300 scooter from Costco
And it's the best toy I've ever had.
