Empty Answering Machine

by Shayla R Cakes

I heard you say "I looooove you" one last time
As my answering machine no longer blinks "12."
I was finally ready to erase them.
Symbolically erasing you.

These lines, however, cannot be redrawn.

Did I make a mistake?
I allowed my heart to rebreak as I sat there smiling,
And staring at a picture of someone that makes my heart beat
A little faster than you ever did --
Except the first time you and I kissed.

So you'll never actually be erased from my soul.
The mark you've made was with permanent ink,
Or made on a tape unable of destruction.

I regret, however, erasing all of them --
I'll likely never hear your voice again.

I'll always love you though.

Author's Note: The final step of my goodbye to him was erasing all of the messages he left for me.
