It Shouldn't Matter

by Madeline Pestolesi

It shouldn't matter that much to you
But apparently it does.

"Are you a lesbian?"
She asks in an accusatory voice.

"No mom, I promise I am not a lesbian."

"What's next? Safety pins in your nose? Pink hair?"
Even more accusatory.

"No mom."

Then the clincher:
"I don't really want to see you like this."

Ouch.

But it shouldn't matter.
I am still your daughter.
I just made a drastic change in my appearance.
But why should she care?

I mean,
What's the difference between 2 inches of hair

And 3/8ths of an inch?

Not all that much.

And besides,
My previously bulbous head looks smaller.

Author's Note: I shaved my head yesterday. My mom is upset.
