She wears all black,
with designer sunglasses and gold jewelry
that compliments her bright blonde, styled hair.
She hands me a credit card
and explains that,
with her husband passed away last week,
she has had to change accounts
and wants to see if this one still works
until she gets her new card.

I run it through the machine.
It works.

She says "Thank goodness!"
and, as she signs, adds
"It's so hard to be without a Visa."

Something in me wonders
if she finds it as hard
to be without a husband.
