Widening myself to leave

by Gabrielle L Gervais

As I leave,
I widen my mouth to breathe easier
to breathe more
to breathe harder and longer
I widen my mouth to inhale your sweetness

As I walk,
I slow my feet so I have time to feel
the earth
I toe the simple dust-
slow my pace- too eager to get somewhere- anywhere.
to walk with you
I stop my speech and open my eyes
to brightness
I am challenged by your modesty
I am changed by your quietude.
I become desirous of your way
the way your words find meaning in stone
and your songs make sense in my ear.

As I leave,
I leave myself, yet walk away
bigger and bolder
quieter and humbled
as I leave,
Let this piece of me stay with you.
