Pictures of our Past (Memory floods)

by Trisha De Gracia

Sorting through my pictures
I found one of you

then another

-and another-

ones of you and me together
holding one another
arm in arm.

I broke down
into little pieces
thinking about what we had
and reaching for the what ifs
drifting in and out of grasp.
would he take me back now?
would he love me again?
do I want him to?

My eyes opened and his picture was still there
in my hands.
I saw my smile
I saw his...

Pictures don't show the way confusion feels.
They don't show the way I started to feel for another
or the way being torn rips you in 2.
Pictures don't show
how moving on from a major committment
(let alone your first)
tears you somemore
like a test of strength.
Like a test of courage.
They can't show the world how hard it is to be brave
even in the face of a love that can stretch far and wide.

Pictures are a moment in time.
Pictures are pieces of the past.
What ifs hurt more than what ares
and i find it's hard to see whats right infront of you
when you're always looking behind.

I put our pictures
our past
away.

Author's Note: I think this will be one of the last times I ever get one of those floods of what ifs... Jordan knows...

"Pictures don't show the way confusion feels." How very true.
