samantha by Emily G Myersshe liked me
put her head
on my knee
eyes slowly
shutting
the calm
covering
like blankets
only alive
on the planet
two years
already she's got
a purse
& heels
purple&shiny
cute nose like
her bro's
& the sweetest
laugh
she liked me
giggled easily
& let me
> a stranger <
protect her from
> a monster <

like she'd known me
all along 06/13/2003 Author's Note: Sadie impressed me with her fierce loyalty to her brother. Samantha was a totally different story. Being a little younger (two, almost three), she seemed to be more open and trusting. Her acceptance of me was so moving. Once she let me in, Sadie instinctively followed. How do you thank a two-year-old for that? And then we took her over to her grandma's and she insisted on bringing her sparkly purse and shiny high heels. "She's already jazzy!" And she so is.
