The American Way

Ms. Rosa Parks was a very brave woman. Almost 100 yrs after slavery was abolished in the United States she had had enough of being treated as a second class citizen in her own country. Ms. Parks merely wanted to sit in a front seat of a public bus and was arrested for refusing to move to a back seat. She firmly and heroicly stood up for herself and all Americans who still fight for equality under the law. Each of us owes a huge debt of gratitude to Ms. Parks.

It wasn't until 1967 that laws restricting marriage based on race were voided by a decision of the U.S. Supreme Court. In the opinion delivered by the Chief Justice, he stated:

"These statutes also deprive the Lovings of liberty without due process of law in violation of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men."

The plaintifs in the case were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Loving.

They blew up the twin towers.
They attacked American soil.
I saw it on my tv
and my blood began to boil.
I love my country dearly,
I love it from coast to coast.
I can travel where I want to go,
visit what I like the most.
I'm an American and that's the American way.

I can buy myself a weapon,
an AK-47, or a magnum if I choose.
If you are a burglar,
well, I win and you will lose.
They can send me to a foreign shore
to kill our enemies dead.
I can track 'em down,
blow 'em up, fill 'em full of lead.
I'm an American and that's the American way.

I pay my taxes every year
and send a check to the IRS.
I can vote for who I want to,
maybe someone will clean up the mess.
I can support a war, march for peace,
call myself a hawk or a dove.
But I can not marry whoever I want,
should I ever fall in love.
I'm a gay American and that's the American way.

The American way... I have never seen a problem with loving this country and still being able to point out some of its problems. Great poem.

Wonderful read! This week we had the first gay marriage in Belgium! Guess we beat America to it, huh? yet still a lot of people over here think America is far ahead in everything.

i have come back to this piece a few times, and I just now noticed I have yet to comment on it. It shows just how much someone will do for their country, and how the country can't seem to repay their citizens for all of that, by letting them marry who they want to. hopefully we will see that change.

A GREAT WRITE! The last stanza just tells it like it really is. The last 3 lines....WOW! You hit the nail on the head! I love the honesty here.
