In memory of Jack for my friend Ev

by Lisa-Dawn Sparling

Gray hair framing your face,
Each wrinkle from worrying about your kids,
And all the long days worked.

Soft eyes smiling,
Memories and sincerity deep within them,
They spoke even when you didn’t.

I will never forget the fishing trips,
The home you built for us with your own hands,
The hands that I held onto when I said goodbye.

I have always been and will always be a daddy’s girl,
You built me up and taught so much,
I would not be me if I didn’t experience you.

I will always feel your presence,
I know that there are things you probably wanted to say,
It’s ok that you didn’t say them; I saw the words across your face.

I will always miss you dad,
You are a part of who I was and who I am.
You still teach me – even though you are not here.

Thank you dad for all that you gave,
Even when times weren’t the best
I always knew I had you.

Author's Note: For my friend Ev, in memory of her father. It was difficult for me to write because our fathers are/were so similar. both ev and I are the baby of six, both have 5 girls and one boy in the family. both grew up being our fathers "little boys" so to speak. Her dad passed away Jan. 1st of 2003 of pancreatic cancer.
