Bustle Between

by Amanda Conlogue

days before summer
and the heat, the heat
it radiates from the sky
shimmers off the pavement
melting me between my
bustle from work to
an even hotter kitchen
I have just enough time
to run errands, the grocery
the cleaners, the bank
I carry them through
with rough impatience
thinking of you
all the while and when
can I make time
to see you and watch
your smile break
like the unstoppable crescendo
of an ocean wave
over me
enveloping me
washing away
my sweaty impatience.
