Jaded Determination

by Max Bouillet

When out of matches with a broken lighter, no gas stove, and a dysfunctional car lighter; he was the type of man who tried to light his cigarette in the microwave.
When that failed, he tried a different tactic --all with the same emotion which could be best described as jaded determination.
He was unimpressed with everything.
He knew tasks had to be done and he did them.
But it gave no satisfaction or discomfort.
It was simply accomplished.
Each accomplishment served as a cue for the next task.

His life passed at a moderate rate.

Ragged but without fear, he did not tremble before God.
Nor did he wail in indignant beratements toward the Creator.
He simply flicked his cigarette caressed his beard and decided he would deal with situation as it presented itself.
But showing no emotion at the trial did not improve his situation with the judge.
He went to Hell.
They took away his cigarettes just when he realized he was finally in a place where he could always find a light.
This bit of irony annoyed him, but he had things to do.

His afterlife passes at a moderate rate.

Reminds me of the song "Isn't It Ironic?"...such irony in this world is artistically demonstrated with this poem. This is the first poem of yours that I've read...so of course, I gotta read some more now!
