It's too hot to sleep

by Cathlyn Cartier

It's too hot to sleep.
The hum of the fan anesthetizes my mind; dulls my senses,
yet slumber remains impossible.

Bleary eyes staring at a color monitor,
feebly searching for something to spark interest; awaken my intellect.

It's too hot to sleep.
The Sandman must be on vacation... in Alaska?

Oh to be in Alaska! buried under blankets with a slightly nipping chill in the air, to feel the welcoming embrace of Hypnos and Morpheus.

But alas, I am thousands of miles away in the second largest state, enduring what promises to become a summer of record highs.

It's only June and already air conditionsers are giving up their last cool breath of life as they lose the battle of soaring degrees.

It's too hot to sleep.
My body yearns for respite upon this night,
yet slumber remains impossible.

Author's Note: Probably not terribly witty. Born out of the misery and despair of trying to sleep, with a mostly dead A/C with indoor temps at 85 and humidity even higher.

Well, your heat perhaps is why it is cool here. I am not complaining! I feel the heat from Texas! I was in Houston a number of years ago during a heat wave. It was 115% outside and 85% inside! Hot and humid! We were so glad to get into Colorado! You've made us feel the heat!

Sweltering poetry, Cathlyn. The kind of poem that just hangs in the night. Good stuff. Peace...

Good poem Cath. It is hot here but we don't have high humidity. You have my sympathy....Charlie
