Surviving The Storm

by Kate Demeree

Today I cried for all of the things
That could have been
For boats left tied at the dock
Sails left unfurled
Kisses left untasted
Arms empty
Words unspoken
Or unheard
Paths that never found our feet
Rain which poured
Separately

Though I know I stand not a chance
Of surviving this storm
I don my mac and boots
Heading into the night
The wind and rain
Reminding me that I am
Still alive in body
If not whole

Breakers washing along the shore
Taking their allotment of sand
Each contributing to change the land
Stormy clouds grumbling in the sky
Is this then godÂ’s hand?

Onward I march, refusing to cry

Powerful statement of trying to weather life's storms, especially alone, and making the bold decision to carry on. Very evocative in its imagery and meaning.

This poem has a great voice.... I could almost taste the sand from the breakers... good job.
