Happy Birthday

by Kitty Ness

Happy birthday.
(Last-time-I-saw-you day.
Make-you-pay day.)

Fumbling in the dark,
in the car at two a.m.
"Happy birthday."
"Thank you, Peach."
"Later."

Not later, not ever.
Secrets you took with you
and flung back
out of the window
of the same car where I said
happy birthday.

Excellent articulation of the birth of a new way of thinking, or new way of life. Fantastic word-crafting.
