Lines

by Amanda J Cobb

They criss-cross our world,
horizontally,
vertically,
diagonally...
any which way at all,
absolutely.
They direct and order our lives.
They tell us which side of the road to drive on,
where to stand and where to wait,
where to stop,
where we can and cannot go,
where what we know becomes what we do not,
where what we are becomes something we are not,
where "our" land ends
and "their" land begins.
They serve as boundaries
and fences and borders,
fracturing a whole
into smaller, inflexible sections.
They make irreversible distinctions
that categorize and seperate,
label and divide,
limit and restrict.

We are a world of lines,
of supposed differences,
and that is perhaps the biggest obstacle
we need to overcome.
