For Once

by Amanda J Cobb

Too soon, she said, too soon.
You'd like to have my heart
and maybe, in time, I'd like to give it.
But, please, let me get it completely back,
have it be only my own for awhile -
he still has a part of it
and though I no longer give it to him,
it seems slow in coming back to me.

I'd like to know how it feels
to have it whole,
for once,
before I give it away again.

Beautiful and poignant. Great poem about recovering and the fear of potential re-loss. Well-crafted.

The voice is reminiscent of a child's.
