#9 (The Illiterates)

by Amanda J Cobb

There is a big, red sign announcing it
in big, capitalized block letters:
"Full Serve Pump."
Right on top of the console,
plain as day.
And there are smaller signs,
bright pink,
at eye-level and next to each nozzle,
clearly telling the world that
"This is a Full Serve pump."
And to top it all off,
the little windows that display the price
are forty cents more than the self-serve prices
posted on our big neon sign.
Could we make it any clearer?

Yet, with all of that,
the bright reds and pinks
and the big, block letters,
still, about five times a day,
I have to get on the intercom
and tell the illiterate fools
trying to pump their own gas
that they need to move
to a self-serve pump.

Obviously if they're trying to pump it themselves,
they weren't looking for full-serve.

Most of them pull around to a self-serve pump,
but some drive off in embarassment.

As well they might.
