#8 (Full-Serve)

by Amanda J Cobb

Yes, we're old-fashioned.
We still have a set of pumps
where we will come out
and pump the gas for you,
and maybe check your oil
and wash your windshield.
it costs you forty cents more per gallon,
but, hey, you don't have to move.

I don't really like doing it.
The extra forty cents doesn't go to me,
so why should I?
It's usually rich, middle-aged women
who are afraid of getting dirty -
or worse, rich, middle-aged men.
40-year-old men needing an
18-year-old girl to pump their gas for them.
Sad.

I don't mind doing a full-serve
for handicapped people
or the old ones who can't walk as well.

But the people who are perfectly capable
of pumping their own gas
but who want a full-serve
just because they're lazy
or it's raining
or it's too cold out -
they disgust me.
Especially when they get out
and walk inside to pay anyway.

Too often I find myself
muttering under my breath
'If you were going to get out anyway,
why'd you make me go out there
and get cold in the rain,
making other, self-reliant customers
wait in a line 'til the cashier
gets back from serving your lazy ass?"

But of course I don't say that.
I pump their gas
and accept their money
and secretly hope that a tire gives out on them
on a dirty back road somewhere.
