The Girl Underground by Jessica Yenthe girl who lives beneath the surface
underground, tucked away
hidden from the darkness of the world
the cruelty; the pain
she peers through a glass window
a door unto our lives
all the while, meticulously
observing our mundane activities
she cannot comprehend our bloodshed
poorly vindicated by boastfulness
and our mindless petty fears
for when the mere peasant pierced the air
with his dying scream,
the world turned its head
and she cried. 05/27/2003 Author's Note: work in progress

Posted by Ken Harnisch on 01/07/04 at 08:15 PM profound and devastatingly simple evocation of our tolerance for violence and the lack of appreciation for the ripple effects associated with ignoring its effect on the least among us! |
