The Phone Call

by Amy Niggel

The phone rang,
I picked it up,
what else was I supposed to do?
I didn't recognize the voice,
not at first,
it sounded familiar,
but it didn't click.
All he said was
"the answer is yes"
I knew it sounded stupid,
but I had to know,
so I asked.
"What was the question?"
"Amy?"
It hit me then,
like a ton of bricks.
The letter,
the letter I had all but forgotten,
it was him.
"Took you long enough"
was all I could think to say,
or not think, but blurt out.
That was harsh,
not his fault,
not really at least.
"Wait did you say the answer was yes??"
I was more focused on who was talking,
than what was being said.
So he knew then,
knew all along how I'd felt.
"If the answer was yes then why...
how...
what....?
hold on I'm confused."
soft laughter on the other end
oh great so now he's laughing at me!
"Calm down Cooper,
I know I took forever to get in touch."
(Damn straight you did,
too long!)
"Don't call me COOPER!"
He knew I hated that.
jerk
"We have a lot to catch up on Amy."
(I don't care it's your phone bill not mine)
"Like what?"
"Well for starters,
yeah I knew.
but I didn't know you'd told anyone,
well I was pretty sure at least,
but I didn't want to say anything
'cause I wasn't one hundred percent sure"
(good god he's starting to sound like me)
"Get to the point huh?"
(wow better pull my claws back in for now)
"Well Amy the truth is,
I felt the same way"
"Yeah, yeah I know,
good friend
don't want to ruin the friend ship...
blah blah blah blah..
wait a sec...
felt the same?"
"Yes if you'd let me finish a sentence.
That's why I took so long to get back to you.
I wasn't sure how you'd feel now."
(hmm well I still wanted to jump him
but what if this is a joke?
well better play it safe.)
"How do you feel about it,
now I mean?"
"The same as before"
(great so the first shot I get and it's got to be confusing
of course!)
"Uh ok , so do I. What do we do from here?"
"Well Amy you walk out your front door."
(what the hell was he talking about?
Great I get stuck with a pyscho path!)
Fine I went to my front door,
What else was I supposed to do?
I opened it,
and stepped out into a hot July day.
And there in my driveway,
my little dirt driveway,
stood a truly beautiful sight,
there he was,
as beautiful as I remembered,
standing,
with a dozen red roses,
and the sweetest smile I'd ever seen.
"Ok now what?"
He didn't speak,
he didn't have to,
his kiss said it all.
Wow I thought
and to think
I wasn't even going
to answer the phone.
