Inked Poet

by Derek Gregory

Poets hide behind words
Artist behind brush strokes
I hide behind ink on my body
Sun and moon entwine
With a Celtic dragon
Splashing color on my left arm
A black Horus’s eye
Protects my right arm
The stabbing of the needles
Push out the feelings of
Loneliness and monotony
As the Ink spreads
The more I disappear
People only see tattoos
Not my soul
They see stereotypes
Not my art or words

Personality is what is projected and seen. What matters is the essence hidden by the exterior. Well said.

and bookworms behind reading...
i understand this phenomenon. nice work capturing the feeling of having the real you slowly go invisible to the public 'eye'.

as far as criticisms go,
As the Ink spreads
The more I disappear

there's a slight awkwardness to those two lines not found in the rest of the poem. it works as is, but it could be a little better.

As a poet, I know the feeling. I seem to be one person in the "public eye" and then poetry is where the real me comes out. But not many people who know me in person actually see my poetry, so there's this sort of duplicity. *remembering she's supposed to be commenting on the poem* I like this, though I agree w/ Rhyana about the awkward line. And hey, Horus' eye and a Celtic dragon...cool.

I rather enjoy your poem of self-discovery and I like it the way it is. My only suggestion (since you asked) would be subtle yet meaningful in a positive light. Replace the forth letter in the eighth line with a 'j', and see where it leads you. Good stuff, Derek. Peace...
